Diabetic Shoes and Summer Fun

All people with Diabetes, any type, should take care when choosing shoes.  Many of us have seen shoes for Diabetics that are  horribly ugly, big and bulky types, but I’m here to tell you that you don’t have to have ugly shoes if you are a Diabetic!

Metformin…Diabetes Medication Prevents Breast Cancer!

Diabetes Care, a published journal about Diabetes, has reported that a new study shows that women that take Metformin, one of the main medications for Type 2 Diabetes, has a 56% less chance of getting breast cancer than other female diabetics that take other types of medication.

Click here for the article I found at DBtechno.com.

Metformin is used to regulate the amount of insulin in the bloodstream. It is a very common medication, and my husband, my daughter and myself all take it for our Type 2 Diabetes.

Fat Free Half and Half

Happy Friday, everyone! I have a guest blogger for you today, about the fat free half and half that you may have seen at your local grocery store. If you are using this product, please read the following report carefully! Talk to your doctor or dietitian about what your own personal needs are, but this is a product that will never be in our refrigerator.

Take it away, Steve!

*********

I’m not a medical doctor so take what I say here with the proverbial grain of salt (though be careful you don’t get too much because salt is… well, that’s a topic for another post!)

Roasted Turkey

When we can find a good deal on a whole turkey or ham, we like to buy a couple and freeze for future use. Today I am roasting a turkey, a whole 13 pound turkey that we paid just over $7 for. It was after the holidays, so it was a good deal!

We will get several good carbohydrate free meals and snacks out of this meat, and the bones will be put back into the freezer to eventually use for making soup broth. Turkey broth is more “gamey” tasting than chicken, so I like to mix some chicken broth with the turkey broth to help mellow the flavor a bit when making the soup.

Denial

More and more, I am learning about people that are in denial about having Type 2 Diabetes. Please, don’t let denial cause you to have complications later! I know it is easy to deny it if there haven’t been any complications early on, but it doesn’t take much to get the damage started.

Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich

I have always loved a good peanut butter and jelly sandwich, but stopped eating them after the Diabetes diagnosis. I figured that they were a thing of the past, to be remembered fondly, but never again to have.

Dawn Phenomenon AKA Dawn Effect

Some of us wake up with higher blood sugar numbers than we have later in the day.  My highest readings of the day come first thing in the morning. This seems to be fairly common, and the suspected reason make a lot of sense. As our bodies prepare for us to wake up and get our day started, it dumps a load of glucose into our blood stream to help fuel our sleepy bones. This is called the dawn phenomenon or dawn effect.

Stress, illness and diabetes

As we move into the spring and summer months, you may find yourself with more stress, mentally, emotionally and physically. For those of us that have kids, summer break means no school. What do you do with your kids while you have to work? Hiring someone costs money, which adds more stress. Vacations are also stressful as we want to pack in as much fun as we can. It is stressful financially, mentally and emotionally to plan a vacation that will provide fun for all ages involved. And then there are all the problems with allergies and pollen making people feel bad physically.

Coffee…it does a body good!

When I was a kid, I was told that drinking coffee stunts a persons growth, so only adults could drink it. As I grew up, I found that it was a taste that you had to get used to. Well, I quickly did get used to it, and now I love to have coffee often. We typically drink a couple of 10 cup pots each day, between the two of us. Steve drinks more of it than I do. Neither of us care for flavored coffee. Our favorite is Breakfast Blend from Gevalia. It is a little pricey, but it is far better than what is found at our grocery store. In a pinch, any will do though!

Maple Syrup Guest Article

We have received a guest article from a reader of our Cooking Made Simple blog and I thought I would share it here too. Please be aware that this is about preventing diabetes and slowing cancer cell growth. This is not meant to cure diabetes or help to maintain blood glucose levels. Talk to your doctor or nutritionist before changing your diet. If you decide you want to try this, be sure that you use real maple syrup in moderation, and never the corn syrup junk that is so ubiquitous.

We thank the author for contributing. You can find out about her at the end of this article.
