Denial
More and more, I am learning about people that are in denial about having Type 2 Diabetes. Please, don’t let denial cause you to have complications later! I know it is easy to deny it if there haven’t been any complications early on, but it doesn’t take much to get the damage started.
Very quickly, my eyesight started to get blurry. I also have a lot of nerve tingling and pains, which might be from the Diabetes, but could be from something else. I don’t want to find out what comes next! Steve has areas on his feet that have no feeling anymore. I have read about this, and I believe that he can get the feeling back, in time, with keeping his blood sugar levels from spiking a lot, and keeping the numbers down. Not keeping his blood sugar in control will cause his numb areas to turn to sores that get infected and wont heal, and poor circulation that can lead to amputation.

Many people find it tough to accept this diagnosis, but it isn’t a death sentence. There are many diseases worse than this, and we should all be thankful that we are here, and can work on this and be healthier than many others are. We have to be thankful for each day that we get the chance to improve our health! We have to work hard to make ourselves the best we can be. It feels good to take control, I promise!
To do this, you need to discuss with your doctor or dietitian what diet will be best for you. Do your homework and then go to your next doctor appointment ready to ask questions. Write them down, and take the paper with you so that you can remember to ask everything you are unsure about. Ultimately it is up to you what you eat, but between your research, recommendations from your doctor, and testing your blood you can decide for yourself what is best for YOU.

One thing you need to do for sure, is to get rid of the stuff you can’t eat. If you have a family, ask them to eat those foods elsewhere or not at all. It wouldn’t hurt for the entire family to learn new and healthier eating habits! Get rid of the sugary and high carb processed foods and replace them with healthy choices. Replace canned foods with frozen or fresh. If you choose frozen, be sure that there is no sugar or corn product added.
If you are like me and addicted to soda, find a diet product that you can tolerate. This was tough for me. I was a die hard Pepsi fan for more than half of my life! I finally found Cherry Coke Zero to be one that I not only tolerated, but I actually like it! I really feel that it isn’t very good for us to use a lot of sugar substitute and am trying to increase my water consumption and decrease my sugar substitute intake. It is tough though. I find that sucralose works for us. This is the well known Splenda. I also like a brand called Apriva. Many foods can be cooked or baked using a sugar substitute. You can easily find recipes online, and I will post some from time to time. Try different ones if you are interested in sugar substitutes and see which type you like. There is one that is from a natural plant called Stevia. It comes in a few different brands. I found that I don’t care for the taste at all, as it tastes extremely bitter to me.
