Hot Hot Hot!
Many of us are experiencing some hot days this summer. Those of us that have Diabetes, and some other health problems, need to be extra careful in the sun and if your house is too warm. Some medications can have a bad reaction to sunlight, so be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.
Be sure to drink lots of fluids, especially water. It is easy to be overcome by the heat faster than our bodies can cool us down. We are fortunate enough to have air conditioning, but if you don’t, try using a squirt bottle with cool water squirted on your legs, feet, arms, head…anywhere that you are too hot! If you don’t have a squirt bottle, use a washcloth or small towel. Get it wet with cold water and place it on your neck, wrists and forehead. From time to time wave it through the air, and it will get colder again.
Playing outside can be fun, but it can also be deadly. The fresh air and sunshine are both important to us, as is being around nature. Listen to the birds singing to one another, watch the trees swaying in the breeze. Drink lots of water.
And don’t forget to take advantage of this season for fresh fruits and vegetables! Lots of good and nutritious food out there right now. If you can, get extra and freeze it for winter. Just remember to leave the corn and potatoes for someone that doesn’t have Diabetes!
