A Smooth and Sweet Treat

Most of us love smoothie type drinks. Well, I don’t really know what makes a “smoothie” a smoothie. Is it perhaps that they are made with yogurt? I don’t make ours with yogurt, so maybe they are just delicious drinks instead of smoothies!

I have been taking advantage of the fresh fruits that are available now and am freezing some for using this winter. Some of it though, has been wonderful in refreshing fruity drinks during this horrible heat.

My recipe is simple and easy to make using a blender. For this drink I tossed into the blender:

8-10 medium sized strawberries

Half a cup of fresh blueberries

Half a cup or so of half & half milk

1/3 a cup of Apriva sweetener

About 4 cups of ice cubes.

Blend until completely smooth. This will make about 4 servings.  You can make a number of delicious combinations using any fruit you like, and even some vegetables go nicely! Apriva is Kroger brand Splenda, sucralose. For us, it is cheaper and tastes better, and has zero carbs. Some sweeteners still have carbohydrates so be sure to check the label. Good habit to get into for all labeled foods.

The ice makes the drink cold and thins it out a bit. Let us know your favorite flavors and we will give it a try if it is without our diet!

Remember, if you have Diabetes, be sure to check your glucose levels before and 2 hours after to know if this type of drink is ok for you. We do eat fruit nearly every day here without problem by keeping our portions low, for instance sharing a pear instead of eating a whole one, and always eating fat with it, like a piece of cheese, or if we have berries we limit ourselves to approximately 1/3 of a cup, and add a splash of half & half or cream over them.
