Dawn Phenomenon AKA Dawn Effect

Some of us wake up with higher blood sugar numbers than we have later in the day.  My highest readings of the day come first thing in the morning. This seems to be fairly common, and the suspected reason make a lot of sense. As our bodies prepare for us to wake up and get our day started, it dumps a load of glucose into our blood stream to help fuel our sleepy bones. This is called the dawn phenomenon or dawn effect.

If you have noticed that your BG (blood glucose) is higher when you wake up, don’t panic. Talk to your doctor. Possible ways to bring this number down are a change in medication or a carbohydrate free or low carb snack before bed, like a piece of cheese or a handful of nuts. If you aren’t sure if you have this, check your BG during the night, around 3 AM, and first thing in the morning. If it is higher than before you eat, then you might be experiencing dawn phenomenon.
